SCHUYLER, Neb. -- Schuyler Central High School’s efforts to create a water science laboratory classroom received a boost from Cargill. Cargill’s $9,000 contribution represents the initial funding to make this project possible.

Schuyler Central High School is the only school in Nebraska to offer a water-science class to fulfill graduation requirements in science. Currently, the water-science classroom lacks lab equipment and is too small to meet the needs of the growing class size. Plans to remodel a classroom include sinks, cabinets, counters and work stations. The lab will allow students to have hands-on learning opportunities that were not available in the previous classroom.

“Cargill’s generous gift will allow Schuyler Central High School to make our water-science classroom something for this entire community to be proud of,” said Robin Stevens, superintendent of schools. “We are pleased to expand our long-time partnership in new ways.”

The grant was made possible by funds from Cargill Cares Schuyler, an employee-led community-involvement team at the facility; those funds were matched by two corporate program designed to support local environmental projects in Cargill communities. In addition to funding, the Cargill facility plans to continue its employee involvement with the water-science classes.

“Our youth are our future, and protecting our natural resources is vital, so supporting Schuyler schools was important, “said Vaughn Blum, general manager of the Cargill Meat Solutions facility. “This program is one way that Cargill supports the community where we live and work.”
